How To Stop Thinking Negative

Today we will be talking about the top 10 ways on how to stop thinking negative in your life. This problem is like a poison and it will drain you so quickly in everything you do. It will literally take the joy out of the most amazing things.

Having a constant negative outlook on life will stop you from achieving your full potential. Negativity is defined by as “lacking in constructiveness, helpfulness, optimism, cooperativeness, or the like.”

With this definition, we learn that negativity is not helpful, is not cooperative and is certainly not constructive. You are physically destroying your life by your negative thoughts. In the book, The Happiness Trap, author Russ Harris says, “80% of everyone’s thoughts contain some sort of negative content.”

It is very common to have negative thoughts, but it is unacceptable to not be able to overcome the negative thinking that you are creating. Negative thinking is like a virus, it can spread quickly and it can be deadly.

Combating negativity is very difficult. You may be asking; how do I stop my negative thoughts? How can I turn my negative thoughts into positive ones? Don’t you worry, you are in luck! Here are the top 10 top ways on how to stop thinking negative!

How To Stop Thinking Negative In Life:

1). Smile Through Life:

Make an honest and consistent effort to smile more! Smile through tough times! It is true that you can smile your negativity away, because the energy surrounded by a smile is addictive and contagious. We have the amazing ability to change our energy and our reactions to a situation. So, if a frown is keeping you down, then smile.

2). Stay Away From Negative People:

Consider surrounding yourself with people who think more positively. Don’t let other people dictate the type of thinking you may have. Find a group of people that think about the best-case scenario and whom can visualize a more positive outcome. You will start to find yourself thinking more positively and being a happier person.

3). Read About Inspirational People:

Many people who are successful in this world didn’t get life handed to them! Sure, there are some people who were born into wealth, but a lot of people started out in very humble beginnings and hustled their way to the top. For example, take a look at Steve Jobs’s life story! Read about successful people to get inspired to be positive.

4). Play Up The Positivity:

When something good and positive happens in your life don’t just shrug it off. Pretend that the positive thing is the greatest event of your life. If you find a dollar on the ground, truly consider this to be the happiest moment of your life. If you play up the small positives in your life you will begin to realize how much positivity there is around you.

5). Understand The Fact That People Like You:

Have you ever sent somebody a text and they didn’t respond right away and so naturally you thought, “oh my gosh they hate me!” Stop automatically assuming that people don’t like you. Don’t leave a conversation assuming they are talking negatively about you the moment you leave. Stop letting your social anxiety run your life.

6). Exercise:

“Endorphins make you happy and happy people don’t just shoot their husbands.” As silly as this line is from the movie Legally Blonde, she has a point. Exercising is a natural high with no drop like sugar does. Exercising will uplift your mood, create a positive mind set and will also improve your overall health

7). Serve Others: (The Most Important)

When you serve others, you don’t have time to think about yourself and how many things you lack. Start doing small acts of service towards other people and watch your negative thinking wash away. Other people have it worse then you and one of the best ways to avoid negative thinking is helping others who may have harder struggles.

8). Forgive Yourself:

Nobody is perfect. We all make mistakes. We all do things that we aren’t proud of and want to change. Don’t let these mistakes ruin your life. If you can make amends, do it! But, if it’s something that cannot be changed, move on! There are going to be moments in our life that we are not proud of, but we can’t let them dictate our future.

9). Create A Gratitude Journal:

Do you ever forget how much you have been blessed with? Sometimes we start thinking negative because we don’t have more and then we forget how much we already have. Consider creating a gratitude journal where you are writing five things that you are grateful for that day. Every day is a gift, so write about it!

10). Have Daily Positive Affirmations To Read:

You are awesome! Everybody is amazing. We all have talents, we all have positive qualities and wonderful things about us. It is okay to tell yourself that you are fantastic. It is okay to tell yourself that you did a great job. Continually through the day tell yourself the good things that you are doing. You are your best critic, but you are also your best supporter.

It truly does take a positive attitude to lead to success. You must not only have a positive outlook on yourself and your abilities, but you must also have a positive outlook on life.

Our goal is to be positive in this life. Positivity (in this context) is defined by as “encouraging or noting a healthy or balanced outlook toward something.”

You are right. It is very important to have a positive look on things or you will find yourself being consumed by negativity. Me personally I work out that is the spear head to me staying positive. Out of the 10 I also feel that staying away from negative people is a good one. Thanks for the advice.

      Hi Ronnie

Your so welcome, and I agree staying away from people that are negative is HUGE. You have to be around people who are super optimistic and are going after what they want in life, not what they think they can get. I hope that my site continues to help you in all areas of your life. Wishing you great success in everything you do this year and for many years to come.

Great tips for making positivity a daily habit. One thing I do that seems to start me off on a good footing is to smile in the mirror first thing in the morning and say it’s going to be a great day and that I look and feel great. I think too many of us sulk around in the morning and we believe our pick me up is our morning coffee. Such a rut. Thanks for a great article!

      Hi Linda

You are right I feel that it is very important to keep a positive attitude to keep from being consumed by negativity. Me myself I work out and that is where my positiveness stems from. I think the staying away from negative people is a great step. Thanks for your advice.

Great post but I have one query – if negativity is bad isn’t an over focus on positivity equally so? The truth is that life is perfectly balanced, containing a mixture of events that people call good or bad.

Hasn’t evolution equipped us with many survival techniques – one of which is a certain amount of negativity? Ignoring this voice totally would be as misguided as an overly positive – everything’s rosy – attitude. Both could have got our distant ancestors killed.

I believe that the key is to keep a balanced outlook and acknowledge the positive and negative thoughts we have without letting them rent a room in our head.

      Hi Steve

Thanks for stopping by. I think over focusing on the positive is HUGE. Negative is negative, and should be avoided at all costs. And I agree that life is a mixture of good and bad. For many successful people I know, they keep a very rosy attitude at all times. If the negative enters there mind they look at it, and brush it aside. Grant Cardone who I follow has a phenomenal attitude about everything. One of my favorite posts by him, he basically says BE DEAF to ALL negativity. If your around it remove yourself from it because it is the cause of all failure and misery in life. And keeping things balanced is a term that has been used forever that I think holds a lot of people back in life.

I personally don’t believe in balance whatsoever, but in being over the top in all areas of our lives. I think we should all be obsessed, super freaks, and never accepting defeat or have balance when it comes to making a difference in peoples lives. I would rather be obsessed and have no balance and hustle, then accept anything less, only because its from that kind of work ethic and mental attitude that causes massive outstanding results that people crave.

The way you say to keep a balanced outlook and ACKNOWLEDGE the positive and negative is HUGE. Most people don’t do that and usually the negative takes over. I really appreciate that, its so so true. Love your site btw. Will keep following you 🙂

This was a great post to read. I definitely have a lot more negative thoughts than positive thoughts in my head. If something negative happens to me, I tend to carry it through for days. These tips will be very helpful to me. I don’t have problems avoiding negative people outside work, but sometimes it can be very difficult to avoid negative people who you work with.

  • Dairyn

I can relate with your post. I had negative thoughts before but eventually I turned them into positive ones. We have to have a positive self-image in order to be more productive.

Yes, I agree that negative thoughts can destroy our lives. It is better to think positive always no matter what are circumstances are.

    Thanks for sharing!

Great list and my 2 favourites are exercise and forgiveness. I start every day with a workout, first thing in the morning. You have to keep moving forward and forgive yourself for no matter what happened yesterday, it’s gone forget it.
    Really enjoyed this post, thanks.
